My Redesign of the Newer Disney Costume Flintock

Post  Bilge Rat on Wed Mar 07, 2012 12:56 pm

I know you have all seen the newer Disney Toy " Costume " flintlock. The undersized hollow plastic toy with the orange sides. Well, I have had one for quite a while and never liked it or used it as the zizzle is way better in size and construction. So I decided to retool it into a non SA version of Jack's new box lock Queene Anne.
A little time with an exacto knife, some PVC Pipe and some epoxy putty took me to this.

Some sanding, filling and more epoxy, then primer has brought me to this

After it has dried for a few days, then wet sanded again, I will start the final paint job. I know it's not SA at all, but I think I like the direction it's headed!
I thought about removing the hammer and frizzen, then moving them to the center top to make it more like the box lock, but the plastic is so thin, and I think no one will really notice anyway.

Had great warm weather today, and some free time, so I continued on. Ran out of silver paint, but this is what it looks like so far.

Yes, I could work something out, I would maybe do a bulk run
of these. I wonder how many would be interested?
I would want to purchase all the toy guns at one time, I know that
would cut down the cost per gun as the shipping would be less.
If I knew how many where interested I could come up with a price.
They would all be air brush painted, then sealed.
Any interest guys, so I have a rough idea ?

I'm in!

Could you also potentially do Jack's original pistol too? If you could find more Zizzle's, or something as good or similar. Wink

I think it's awesome. I just wish they weren't blow molded. But after your mods it looks like a piece of art!

I have 1 true zizzle gun, unpainted, that I picked up off eBay last year, for
$70.00. I also just found a company in China that sells the zizzle as a remake with light and sound, I sent them an email to see if I could purchase some, but min order is
72 units. I have no idea if they will sell me just a few. Speak easy no longer sells the non sound option

Sent an email to 3 more companies in China that offer the zizzle remake, I hope someone gets back to me, one has a 5000 unit min. The other from what I read had a 48 min. The final had a 250 per case qty. I hate that I can find these in huge bulk orders, but not a single one that sells them by single units! Grumpy

Yes, I tried that site, but I think they no longer exist!
Anyone wanna go in on some, I recieved a quote, but I have to buy
78 of them! $498.00. What a deal!
I can't believe I am having such trouble trying to purchase single units!
I even contacted Speak Easy, and they have no more!
None of the manufacturers will tell me who they sell to either! Pillage

498 divided by 78 = 6.38461538 a piece....ahh round it to $6.40, not bad.

Heard from another supplier, best deal yet!
Only 1.37 each which includes shipping to the US!
But here is the catch, I only have to order 30!
I thought, Wow! I could do that!
So I emailed back to verify the 30 amount was correct,
Yep! 30, 30 cases of 48 guns each! That's 1440 guns!
Who's in with me?? LOL !
Oh and I found a back door way into the Chinaewindow site, searched through , did a search for pirate costume, several guns came up, but none where the zizzle copy! I give up! Plank

Huzzah, just when I gave up, I found 3 orig. Zizzles! Dug around my old mail account and found in the archives my original contact back from 2007. I had purchased several dozen from her back then. She sent me a reply and has 3 left, sitting in a warehouse bin. She is going to dig them up and ship them to me! I paid over what they originally were, but not close to the $80+ they get on ebay!
Huzzah! I should have tried contacting her first, instead of all my contact with CHINA Wholesale distributors!

Wow, figures now they open up the site again after I just found more zizzles. $7.99 is not bad at all, but I wonder what shipping from China is?
Still probably cheaper than what I ended up paying for the zizzles, but I got a good deal and the hunt was fun! Sparrow

I'm interested. I have two zizzles, one unpainted and one sort of painted from the first owner. Would like to have really nicely done version. Also...can these be weighted at all?

Yes they can be weighted, if the screws have not been filled in yet, the trick in weighting them is to not fill them too much, and put the weight in the right places so they can go back together without any gaps. You also don'e want to make them too heavy that they pull down on your belts and feel uncomfortable! I just finished up another zizzle and a remake of the smaller toy into a similar Queen Anne.

Moulding From Original

Would it be feasible to consider moulding the parts from a dismantled original.

I am sure it could be done. Those China models were exact the business btw but cheaper plastic. nevertheless once painted one would never know.

The Chinese models are not exact, but close. You can tell they are a recast, and somewhat poorly done. The shape of the gun is slightly pushed out and larger than the Zizzle. They are also much thinner plastic, and not as tightly fitted together as the zizzle is. The recasting is most noticed in the shape, everything on the Chinese version is more squared off, and a bit wider than the zizzle. You can really see this in the shape of the barrel at the end, and the shape of the ramrod. Both are wider and squared in shape as apposed to the slim design and roundness of the zizzle. The battery compartment is a lot smaller on the Chinese knock off, and the the lack of electronics makes me wonder why they even added the battery compartment and the speaker holes. Another big difference is the location of the screws, They are on the left side of the gun. The zizzle has them on the right side. The Chinese version has a screw located right in the top of the trim plate on the left side of the gun, not hard to fill in, but it does cover some of the design. Also one of the eyes on the grotesque face of the butt plate has a slight error to it, not as clean a cast as the zizzle has, also the butt plate is not held in as securely as the zizzles. The zizzle butt cap is actually held in with a screw. The Chinese Knock off is just held in place by a small lip of plastic around the butt of the gun. The zizzle is your best bet, but the Chinese knock off is not a bad choice, just not as well put together or recasted.
A member of KTTC did do some recasting of the butt plate, hammer and frizzen in metal with pretty good results.
