i think your problem is you didnt make the pattern small enough, if you layer that over and over then it might come out better

No, the problem was that Spoonflower don't colour-match anything between the digital file and the print. If it's bluish, it's good enough for them. I got a replacement print from them, and it wasn't any better, so I wrote back again and got refunded. So while their customer etiquette is good, their print quality is severely lacking.

Wow...you should get a refund for that.

It could be salvageable, if you wanted to hand fill the design, but sheesh...that'd take a long time.

Anybody know if Fabric On Demand is any better?

For what it's worth, here is the fabric guru swatch again.

I think it's time to call in the "Big Guns" - looking to outside vendors who make reenactment clothing. Someone has to know where this fabric is.

Well, realize that going that route means that they are going to go with a more historically accurate approach - in other words embroidering over printing - since they cater to reenactors, so you're going to again look at the cost going up. So again, I must recommend Scott Williams since he is already doing it. I know, I sound like a broken record but short of using a stencil and fabric paint and doing it by hand I think that's the only other option.

Aye I'll probably be going with one of Scott's waistcoats. Saw Cristian wearing one today for the UK premiere, and it looked spot on Razz

Good choice mate - you won't be disappointed at all. Oh, for those making their own waistcoats, I found what I think is a very nice complimentary fabric for the back. Now, it's not SA, but close enough for my tastes and looks quite nice with the front fabric:

Rear Waistcoat fabric

Now, I know the real version has a more white back, but I really liked this one. I plan on backing the pocket flaps with it and using muslin as the inside liner.

Haha... CMM... my story is the same as your story... just one chapter behind! ( OMG! I can't believe I got to use that! Laughing )

I was really disappointed in my Ange print... the turquoise was black-green and the paisleys were really bright instead of desaturated...eventually it grew on me and the waistcoat turned out to be be blue-black so the darker background was actually in my favor. Some weathering up could desaturate the paisleys but now that I have the SA stuff on the way, I'm not too concerned about that.

The first thing you did wrong though, it looks like, is adjusting the dpi... I resized my sample images to scale with a ruler I held up on my screen to try to match the measurements. When you upload an image, it sets it to be HUGE...which looks like what happened to yours.

I read through TONS of reviews of SF and saw that cotton prints often turned out darker, which looks like what happened with yours. Either that, or the amount of dark blue just bled into the brown...but all being such a dark hue with the amount of texture in it... I'm kind of not surprised it turned out that way... But I still kinda am that it turned out THAT crappy. At least you got a refund... which is the chapter I didn't venture into. I just dealt with it.

I, however, had much better luck with my print! I went with the sateen and the colour was much more accurate in printing and the quality of the print is very crisp. It's actually a little bit BRIGHTER than I had hoped...but my file was a bit bright to begin with anyways, in retrospect.

Here are some photos... if anyone wants to use it, let me know and I'll link you. I love you

I think a good weathering would really improve the look of it, too... but I'm super inexperienced in that area...as in... have never even attempted it before... but maaaybe I'll have to give it a go to try to darken it up.

edit: the last two pics were taken with my new Sony camera which makes EVERYTHING stupidly bright because you can't adjust the flash level and... I may have left the EV too high for most of the pictures before I noticed and re-adjusted it... >_>

You can use my pattern if you like. I've managed to make my own embroidered waistcoat so no longer need to print one, and I don't see the harm in sharing the resource. My image linked below is 100% tileable, so you can repeat the pattern over and over and it should come out flawless. If you use it, let me know! Smile
