Finally found me a home port!

Post  RobbW on Mon Nov 11, 2013 11:25 am

Hello, all.  Thought I'd stop in real quick and make polite introductions.  Name's Robb, if it wasn't obvious.  I have been a fan of POTC and CJS ever since I saw the first film.  Unfortunately, life has an annoying habit of limiting your spare time.  So, I have not been able to get as obsessed with POTC, Jack, and Johnny as I otherwise would.  Thankfully, that is beginning to change.  With a recent occupational upgrade, I now have a bit more time (and a couple more nickles in my pocket) to get a little more OCD with my Jack-ing about!  After finding other Jack-inspired web locations in the doldrums of late, I was guided to the Brethren Court by Simon in the UK.  (Thanks, Simon!)

While a fan of the films for many years, it was only recently that I started getting into CJS costuming (or costuming at all, for that matter).  It started innocently enough. We went on a Disney cruise a couple years ago during the Halloween season.  They had a Pirate Night and a Halloween party on board, and I decided to go as the captain.  I hastily assembled a hodge-podge of Halloween store-quality CJS costume garb and managed to get it packed in our luggage without going over the weight limit.  I had loads of fun dressing up and acting like someone else.  Since then, I have added pieces to my costume bit by bit whenever I had time and a dime to spare.  However, my additions were usually just cheap accouterments I could smuggle into the house and onto my costume without being noticed by those keeping a weather eye on the family finances.

After pillaging the neighborhood as our swashbuckling hero this past Halloween, I have decided I really want to upgrade the quality and accuracy of my costume as much as possible.  Unfortunately, I do not have the time or the funds to achieve top-shelf quality and screen accuracy, but I expect my costume to be relatively respectable once completed (is it ever complete?).

Anyway, I look forward to getting to know everyone around here, learning more about CJS costuming, and making positive contributions to the dialogue.  My real-world life as a husband, father, and accountant may interfere here and there, but I hope to stay mostly up-to-date with all the goings on!

Cheers,
Robb

I'm so rude... Please excuse me for not introducing myself and allow me to amend.

My wife has always been a Johnny Depp fan and when we first started dating she took me to see his new film POTC:COTBP... we both loved it and agreed Johnny stole the show. Heading back home from the movie my wife, girlfriend at the time, said

"You could be his stunt double."
I said "what?"
"Johnny Depp..." she says "you look a lot alike, you should totally dress as Jack Sparrow for Halloween next year!"
"Ha! yeah whatever you say" I said and laughed it off.

About two Halloweens later she convinced me to give it a try and we pieced together a makeshift CJS with about $20 at a thrift shop and we hit the Las Vegas strip, where we lived at the time. Tourist went bonkers over the vague costume and I must've taken 50 photos at the request of random people. [Halloween 2006]▼

The attention was addictive LOL so I have been upgrading the costume every year and this past Halloween was the 6th time I dressed as the captain.
Happy to be among other Jack fans and have learned so much in the short time I have been frequenting this forum.
Thanks!

New Captain on Deck!

Post  Capt.Falcon on Tue Nov 19, 2013 5:36 pm

Greetings all! My name is Dave and I happened to fall into the this last Halloween. I had to come up with a costume fast and I happened to be watching COTBP for the 6th or 7th time at work and thought "Hey! I should go as Capt. Jack Sparrow! Better go online and see what I can find" Shocked
.......Well......now I'm addicted. Thanks a lot !
My first costume cost a whopping $90. For everything. Looks great at a distance, lol! Even had some overseas tourists take my picture. But now I know better, thanks to all of you, and I have my sights set on making a much better outfit. Much.....much better.

New DOUBLOONS "point system"

Post  Mojo Turbo on Tue Aug 19, 2014 7:14 am

"Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate" Jack Sparrow

So you might have noticed that 'neath your name, lies your "treasure." The only person who can put more gold in yer til is you.

You got +1 doubloon for each profile message, each "friend" to your profile, and you get +1 for every day you've been a member.

Then you get +1 for every "reply" to a forum message and +3 for every topic you create.

"Take what you can... give nothing back."

Post  DrJackSparlow on Thu Sep 04, 2014 4:04 pm

AHOY! I'm happy to see so many people who've gone down this path already. Seems there may be no turning back now.
Hopefully I'll be able to contribute as much as I'll take.

Here's a picture of my ramshackle costume from last year.

I'll be putting effort into this year's costume. Pretty exciting. I'll post pictures as I move along the process.
My mother has been dragooned into sewing my shirt, breeches, and waistcoat.
I'll be trying my hand at cobbling boots. My wife will be playing the part of wig maker.

I've picked up and resized rings from master replica. I've been buying bobbles and bits here and there for Jack's accoutrement.
I bought belt buckles form costume world, but they seem a bit...miniscule? so, have to pick up or make something more better.

A new ship has been sighted! (aka new member introduction)

Post  White Ocean on Sat Jan 23, 2016 6:46 pm

Hello there! Pearl

It took me forever to find my way here. Sparrow I recall having heard about this forum a long time ago at one of the cosplay sites that I frequent but yeah, back then it didn't hit me that this site could be really helpful for my projects!

Okay so, err, I'm a young guy from Scandinavia who is also into cosplay. While I am not a Captain Jack costumer I do have a big interest in dressing up as a pirate nonetheless – I just haven't gotten around to building my first outfit yet. The problem is that I just can't seem to find the really good stuff, ya know. Another problem is my budget, since I'm a student at the moment and can't afford the really high-end stuff.

I don't plan to do any particular character – I just want to do several different pirate-themed outfits, both PotC styled but also some more fantasy-like ones too and heck, maybe even some alternative/goth fashion mixed with pirate accessories for daily wear!
Thing is that I want it all to look as much as the real deal as possible (proper fabrics etc) and not just like some sort of polyester Halloween costume. Those don't click with me, hahah; I'm too picky with quality.
But yeah, the only pirate-like thing in my possession is a custom eyepatch bought from eBay with a sea theme; it has a dark greenish-blue base with some thick netting covering most of the surface, some long plastic seagrass-like decorations on the middle and a small real seashell on top. I'm thinking that I could maybe base a costume idea around it, maybe some kind of former pirate/seaman who was thrown into the sea (for whatever reason) and became either an undead sea-creature or developed some merman traits... I really don't know. Ideas are welcome! I want it to be a character that is not completely human, that's for sure.

I also want to mention that all my life I've been drawn to the sea. As a kid I was crazy about fishes and crabs etc and I would draw them everywhere. When I got older I developed a fascination for ships (especially sailing ships) and with that came an interest for pirates. I love being onboard a cruising ship but one of my biggest dreams would be to be onboard a big sailing ship. Must be hella awesome.

Eh, I think I've talked plenty enough now. Laughing Nice to meet you all!

Hey there White Ocean! Welcome!

I think, I'll post my Sparrow spareclothes soon in the forums. Maybe there are a few things you could use. I am also very picky with fabrics and don't want to use anything plastic, polyester, etc. if possible. That's one reason why I tailored most of my stuff myself. =)

Happy reading and writing to ya! Very Happy
