PROP: Jar of Dirt

Post  Maui512 on Wed May 11, 2011 2:13 pm

Ahoy Mates!

Well, after a long wait for someone else to make a jar, I have decided to embark on the journey myself. After searching for appropriate hinges and coming up empty handed, I will be hand forming them myself. I'm using Masonite and PVC for the lid instead of steel partly to save weight, but mostly to make it easier to build. Here are a few pics from my Facebook page. I'll add more as I progress.

Steve:

You must have got your JOD from the same antique wholesalers store in Whittier, eh?

I'm working on a tin version and going to hit the entire mechanism with resin texture and paint to a rust color.

Also looking at slush casting the actual JOD so you can carry it with you to events without fear of having glass break on you!

Good job..........!!!

I've just haven't had time to finish!

Yup, that's where I got mine too. Thanks to you for posting the link on KTTC Laughing
I'm hoping the rusting goes well on the steel parts, its looking promising so far. For the lid I'm planning on an epoxy coating with iron powder filler and paint. If you do make slush cast jars I'd be very interested in one thumbsup

I think mine was $22 plus change. The shape isn't right but the size is very close.

There have been so many events in which I wanted my JOD but was in fear of breaking glass or event security saying NO to carrying said JOD.

Slush cast shouldn't be too difficult to make but may require ALOT of resin.

I look forward to your final product especially since you have inspired me to get of my JOA and get back to real prop making!!!! Laughing

Ahoy Mates,

A small update on my jar. I think my hardware is sufficiently rusted so onward with construction. Laughing

Here is a test fit of the hardware on the lid blank. I decided on lexan rather than the Masonite I was going to use.

Lid flange is the next step. More pics in a few days.

Okay, well its been more than a few days says I. Its about time says you Grumpy

Its been slow going what with all the new Disneyland stuff. Been off the edge of the map to a galaxy not that far away and set a course through mermaid waters Laughing

Here is where I am currently.

Added the flange on the inside of the lid along with some texture work.

Attached the hinges to the textured top.

And finally added an epoxy coating to simulate the thick paint or tar on the original prop.

I like how the surface texture came out. Looks sufficiently eroded and pockmarked. Now to do some creative painting to add the rust and put it together.

All comments, suggestions, criticism welcome.

Steve

Thanks for the compliments mates. SmileBeer
It took me much longer than it needed to because I experimented with real rust on the steel parts Laughing
Next time I would go with the fake texture since that turned out much more better than I expected. You could finish one in a weekend if you wanted to Smile

I've got a jar of dirt

Post  Shakey Jack on Wed Jan 18, 2012 5:50 am

I bought a jar a couple of weeks ago, have fabricated a lid using perspex strips and the existing glass stopper, all textured to a rather convincing rusty metal finish (photos to follow) I have a couple of things to do now to bring it up to scratch. Firstly, my jar is antique and clear glass. I am looking at the options of etching the surface to make more opaque. Do I go for sand blasting or chemical etching process? Has anyone gone down this route?

Secondly the contents. In all pictures, the dirt seems to sit between half way to two thirds of the way up the jar, so , to keep weight to a minimum I figured I can fill the core with a lighter material. Then the top layer can be free to swoosh around. When jack hold it above his head, the majority of the dirt stays in place, so I figure the studio came up with a similar solution.

Your thoughts, gentlemen please!

Hello!
Look what i found in a antique shop here in portugal.
https://i.servimg.com/u/f39/18/29/82/00/jar10.jpg
Too bad it misses the top part but the rest i think its pretty good. what do you think?
Any ideas where to get the bottom part that keeps the jar closed?
