Metal knob/stud thingy on sword scabbard?

Post  RobbW on Mon Nov 18, 2013 10:24 pm

Can someone please tell me what that metal stud thing is called on the scabbard that keeps it from falling through the baldric frog? My Windlass Pirate Captain's Hanger came with a leather scabbard, but it does not have one of those stud things. I need to get one and figure how in the world to attach it to a scabbard that is already fully assembled. Thanks.

They are called Button Studs

It's almost impossible to put on an already made scabbard but you could give it a try. Very Happy

Sorry, Mojo.  I must have missed that.  Or was that not there until just recently?!  So, is it a "Button Stud" or a "Sam Browne Button" that I seek?  They both look similar.  I really can't tell the difference other than there appears to be some tapering on the shaft of the Sam Browne button.  Also, what size?  I imagine I'll want a brass button rather than nickel or black, and then just weather it.  Also, I read elsewhere that the rivet style button is preferred to the screw-back because the screw can sometimes come loose.  I will probably have to disassemble the sheath slightly to get this thing installed as I cannot think of any other way.

Okay, I think I just discovered the difference.  It appears all the button studs are screwbacks, whereas the Sam Browne buttons are rivet style.  Well, at least I cannot find any rivet-style button studs or any screwback Sam Browne buttons.  I think I'm going to get the Sam Browne button and anvil set linked below. Anything else I'm going to need to install this? I see that most places recommend a leather punch to make the hole for the button stud, but my scabbard has a metal trim around the top over the leather. So, I'm probably going to have to drill a hole for this thing. Also, what can you install (if anything) to have you sword make that "sching" sound when you draw your sword?

Rob,

You are right. As a military type, I have found that most Sam Browne fixings will be rivet. Depending on which half is male will probably dictate how to fix it. You should be able to get it into the scabbard without dismantling though.

I'm beginning to think I may be able to install it without disassembling the sheath, too. Although, I may have to "squish" the sides of the metal trim at the top slightly to make enough room to get the inside part of the stud into the sheath. Should be okay though and will probably just add to the distressed/aged look once I "unsquish" it!

Be very careful installing the Sam Browne rivet if you don't have the proper tools. I would use a piece of wood as a mallet or use the wood as a middle medium between your hammer and the rivet. The stem portion of the rivet bends very easily and once the alignment is off you cannot go back and remove the top part of the rivet. Use very light tapping with your hammering device to get the rivet started and use light taps after that.

Take it from someone that has been installing these things over six years now. I have damaged a few before I bought the rivet tools.

You can use a socket from a socket wrench set but make sure you use some type of padding on the bottom of the socket where metal meets metal. You can see the silicone plastic on the TLF tool on the link above. This way you don't scratch the rivet surface.
